Matt_BioMATT MCDOWELL is the Assistant Chief of Training for the North Charleston Fire Department (SC), Instructor for the South Carolina Fire Academy, President of the Lowcountry FOOLS and President of Safe Firefighter, LLC. He has previously served as Captain for the Bluffton Twp. Fire District (SC), Training Officer for Hardeeville Fire Department (SC) and Firefighter for the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He has a degree in Fire Service Management and coursework in Occupational Safety & Health with concentrations in Fire Science.

JJ JASON (J.J.) JOANNIDES is the Vice President of SAFE Firefighter, LLC and a Captain with City of Columbia Fire Department, previously assigned as a Firefighter on Truck 7.  He is an Instructor for the SC Fire Academy, most recently working in the Curriculum Development Section, and is a founding member of the Palmetto FOOLS.   He has an Associate’s Degree from UNC-Charlotte and extensive training in truck company operations, aerial operations, RIC and survival classes from all over the country.


 CHRIS GARNIEWICZ is a Truck Captain with the Bluffton Twp. Fire District.  He has Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University (MA) and is an IFSAC Fire Instructor 2.  He is an Instructor with the SC Fire Academy, Recruit Cadre with the Bluffton Twp. Fire District and has previously served as volunteer firefighter in Massachusetts.

JUSTIN CUNNINGHAM is a Captain with the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue

CHRIS FORD is a Firefighter with the City of Columbia Fire Department currently assigned to Truck 14.

AJ HOLLOWAY is an Engineer with the City of Columbia Fire Department

CHRIS KIP is a Battalion Chief with the City of Columbia Fire Department where he previously served as the Captain of Truck 7.

DAVID LAIRD is a Battalion Chief with the City of Columbia Fire Department where he previously served as a Captain on Truck 7.

Great ideas guys. Working in our SCBA is a must. When it comes to stretching...up to 30 seconds, but no benefit past that according to most research. A quick stretch after the warm up is also a good idea. Thanks for the work.

Fun workout. Tried to get crew involved, might take a little work. But fun none the less! I went for 40 minutes carry 50lb dumb bells, ladder carry around station, step ups on a box (20), deadlifts (135 @ 15) shoulder press (45lbs 15) squats (20) fast walk around station.

Functional workouts are the best workouts. To many times I've watched as the big strong, weight lifers tend to run out of gas before the job is done. Thanks for putting this info together and stay safe!
